Security officials in the United Arab Emirates, said they are coordinating with Interpol to extradite members of the hit squad, suspected of killing Hamas commander Mahmoud al Mabhouh last month in Dubai. The officials declined to reveal the identities of the suspects.
The Irish newspaper The Herald, said Friday, some of the members of the hit team, used Irish passports to enter and leave Dubai. Security officials estimate seven people were involved in the killing including a woman, the newspaper said.
A member of Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs told the paper they are in contact with local authorities in order to verify the reports.
Mabhouh , who was involved in the abduction and murder of two Israeli soldiers in 1989, died in mysterious circumstances on January 20 in a Dubai hotel room.
He reportedly traveled to Dubai under a false name.
Media reports claimed he had been electrocuted and then suffocated or poisoned. Police said he had been out for most of the day and returned to his room that evening. His body was found by a cleaner.
His brother said it was not the first attempt on his life, the newspaper said. Six months ago, he was rushed to hospital in Dubai in a coma and treated for poisoning.
Mabhouh's funeral was held in Damascus, where he had lived for 20 years with his wife and children.
On Thursday, Guysen International News reported that Lt.Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai’s Chief of Police said if proven Israel’s Mossad was responsible for the killing of Mabhouh, he will issue a warrant for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
UAE authorities have refused allow Hamas officials to visit Dubai since Mabhouh’s death.
