Two Palestinian terrorists were killed and at least seven others injured by IDF tank fire in northern Gaza, after a group of terrorists were spotted approaching the northern Gaza fence to fire at rocket or plant a bomb.
Mohammed al Kafarneh, 22 of Beit Hanoun, was killed outright and a second Palestinian later succumbed to his wounds, the Palestinian Maan news agency said. It claimed seven others, the majority seriously injured, were hospitalized at a local hospital in northern Gaza.
Media reports later said Kafarneh was a key member of the Islamic Jihad.
The incident occurred late afternoon after IDF soldiers spotted a group of armed Palestinians approaching the border fence to fire a rocket or place a bomb, Israeli military sources said.
An IDF tank fired a warning shot before firing a shell in the direction of the cell members.
The armed wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine later issued a statements claiming its National Resistance Brigades engaged in a gun battle with an IDF patrol located in the 300 meter wide buffer zone, a restricted area located between the security fence and northern Gaza. The group said an IDF soldier was wounded in the attack.
The army later denied Palestinian reports that it targeted civilians saying the Palestinian suspects were members of a terror cell. |
