
The identification of the six IAF crew killed in Romania during a training exercise was finalized late Thursday night, and Friday morning the coffins of the six, draped in the national flag, arrived in Israel for burial.
Due to the strained relationship with Turkey, the helicopters who returned late Thursday night from Romania and the plane transporting the bodies of the crew to Israel, were forced to use an alternative route home, lengthening the trip for hours in order to refrain from entering Turkey’s airspace.
Late Thursday night Air Force Yasur helicopters returned home to their base at Tel Nof , flying over the base in formation with one helicopter missing, that of the six IAF crew who crashed in Romania.
The air force pilots and crew members were greeted by family and friends who waited to comfort the air crew after they landed. Silently they embraced each other, trying to come to terms with the pain and sorrow of the sequence of events of the past week.
The six Air Force crew killed in the crash, will be buried later in the day. The IDF Spokesman released details of their funerals: Lt.-Col (res.) Avner Goldman, 48, from Modi’in will be buried at 12 in the military cemetery of Modiin. Lt.-Col. Daniel Shipenbauer, 43, from Moshav Kidron, will be buried at 3 pm in Gderot. Maj. Yahel Keshet, 33, from Hatzerim will be buried at 1pm in Sharona. Maj. Lior Shai, 28, from Tel Nof, will be buried at 12.30 in Haifa. Lt. Nir Lakrif, 25 of Tel Nof will be buried at 12.30 in Haifa and Staff Sgt. Oren Cohen, 24 of Rehovot will be buried at 1.00 pm in Rehovot. |
