Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu compared Iran to a runaway freight train and the international community to a rail car on the verge of derailment. Noting the growing support to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic, Netanyahu said the world needs to move faster. Referring to negotiations to release IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, he said Israel is still waiting for a response from Hamas. Opposition leader Tzipi Livni warned Netanyahu his policies could cause irreversible damage to Israel.
Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu compared Iran’s race for nuclear power as a run away train and the international community trying to garner support for more sanctions on the Islamic Republic, a rail car on the brink of derailment.
Netanyahu made the comments while addressing the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday.
The prime minister discussed the growing support to impose further sanctions on Iran but said the world needed to move faster. “There is political progress towards sanctions in the world, “Netanyahu said, adding that while he was unable to garner Russia’s support for a fourth round of sanctions against Iran, during his recent visit to Moscow, he had witnessed more understanding in the matter.
The prime minister then went on to discuss the negotiations underway to release IDF soldier Gilad Shalit and said Israel had informed the German mediator that Jerusalem is willing to release prisoners in order to bring Shalit back home, but has yet to receive a response from Hamas.
He noted however, that the prisoners will be released but not to areas that will allow them to return to terror.
In response, Opposition leader Tzipi Livni warned Netanyahu his policies could cause “irreversible damage to the State of Israel.” “Your reliance on public opinion polls in the United States points to blindness – if you cannot see the serious deterioration in Israel’s status in the world, it is partly due to your policy,” she said.
Netanyahu also told the Knesset committee Israel will never agree to withdraw from the Jordan Valley in any peace agreement with the Palestinians.
