Fada Sha’ar, a Druze resident of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, suspected of committing crimes against state security,  was the target of a raid on the village that turned violent Sunday, after  thousands of locals tried to prevent police from searching for him. Details of his arrest were revealed on Monday.

Sha’ar is suspected of aiding the enemy in a time of war, contact with a foreign agent and spying.

A gag order lifted on Monday revealed the purpose of the raid, which was orchestrated by the Israel
Security Agency (Shin Bet) and the Police unit of International Investigations. Police had planned to search for Sha'ar in the village.

He was reportedly detained at Ben Gurion Airport after he returned from a trip to France.

Sha’ar has denied the allegations against him. The court remanded him for  seven days. His father, Najed, told reporters he believes his son is innocent. He said his son is a musician and studied in Syria for five years and before that in Egypt.

Unlike Israeli Druze, the residents of Majdal Shams identify themselves as Syrians under Israeli occupation, and are generally hostile to the state.
